SHAREWRE ECHO RULES AND POLICIES
Revised 14 Apr 1993
English is the official echo language.
*************************************************************************
-> ALL USERS WHO HAVE ACCESS TO THIS ECHO MUST READ THIS.
-> BY POSTING MESSAGES IN THE ECHO, YOU AGREE TO ACCEPT AND ABIDE
-> BY THE RULES OF THIS CONFERENCE AS HERE POSTED.
In compliance with FidoNet Echo Policy, the conference rules will be
posted no less than once per month, and nothing in these rules will
supercede or replace any valid FidoNet rule or policy.
Description/Topicality
This is the International FidoNet Echomail Conference SHAREWRE, paid for
by those systems which help distribute it; so, let's try to help keep
costs down. Its topic: Software distributed via the shareware method of
software distribution. Includes Public Domain, Freeware, test drives of
commercial programs, and the moral, ethical, and philosophical issues
surrounding shareware.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Moderator Policy/Continuity
1. All rules violations are to be addressed ONLY by the Moderator, or
Co-Moderator.
2. Questioning or discussion of Moderator policy in the open echo is off
topic, except that the Moderator reserves the right to post special
messages relating to such policy and rules from time to time for the
edification of all participants. I welcome, will listen to and
consider, any suggestion or criticism sent by private hub or
host-routed NetMail.
3. The Moderator shall have the right:
a. To appoint Co-Moderator(s) or Alternate Moderator(s)
b. To set the rules for and call an election for selection
of his/her replacement at any time, or to appoint a
successor upon his/her resignation from the position.
c. If these rules do not cover dealing with a way of being
annoying, to make a new rule to fit the occasion.
4. In the event of the incapacity or unwillingness of the Moderator to
continue to serve, then the Co-Moderator shall have all the rights
ascribed to the moderator.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Message handling and restrictions
1. Messages must remain on the topic of this conference as described
above and in the current EchoList.
2. Foul or obscene language, personal invectives, and "widget wars" will
not be tolerated. Flames should go to the FLAME Echo.
3. Personal messages, chit chat and nonsense are not permitted.
Individual thank you messages are personal, and should be sent by
NetMail.
4. Encrypted, encoded or rotated messages are forbidden.
5. Messages in this echo are considered public domain.
6. Keep the quoted portions of your messages SHORT. Excessive quoting
adds to expense and overhead. Quote just enough to identify the
thread of the conversation for other users. Use enough of the
original material to be sure the thread IS identified.
7. Discussions of any shareware program are encouraged. However, if a
shareware program is popular enough to have its own specific FidoNet
echo, lengthy conversations about it should be taken there.
8. Posting of test messages, exchange of game clues, and posting of BBS
ads will be considered annoying behavior. A BBS offering shareware
files or access to echomail is welcome to make a _one time_
announcement in the echo at the time of startup.
9. Advertising for commercial ventures, even though shareware related,
will not be tolerated. Use either a local conference which permits
such material, or use FidoNet NetMail, where only you pay for it.
>NOTE: An author's announcement of a shareware program will not be
>considered a commercial advertisement.
10. The use of visible ASCII (control) characters ASCII 32 and below is
prohibited in this echo. Use of eight bit characters above 127 will
be permitted, subject to the following restriction:
- No use of such characters to create "cutesy" quote boxes,
multi-line signatures, nor for purely decorative purposes
in messages.
This rule will remain in effect unless I get reports of system
disruptions or until FidoNet technical standards change.
11. Multiple line signatures are not allowed, unless authorized in
advance by the Moderator. Signatures where the person's name is on
the first line, and their title or company position is on subsequent
lines are allowed within reason. The Moderator will decide on a
case-by-case basis which signature lines (if any) violate this rule.
12. If using an alias or handle, messages must be signed with a real
name, unless the Moderator is advised by NetMail of the real name of
the participant and the reason for use of an alias or handle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Porting or Cross Posting
1. This conference MAY NOT be ported to the BIX echomail system,
CompuServe or to any other network's mail system without the express
written permission of the Moderator.
Lee Jackson, Moderator, FidoNet Int'l Echo SHAREWRE (1:382/95)
